The Mount Disappointment Mountain Race takes place near the historic Mount Wilson Observatory in the Angeles National Forest, within the San Gabriel Mountains. The event offers mountain trail running on rugged singletrack, steep fire roads, and scenic ridge lines with sustained climbs and technical descents.
Runners follow courses that include sections of historic trails such as the Gabrielino, Colby Canyon, and Strawberry Peak trails, finishing with the ascent up the Kenyon Devore Trail to Mount Wilson. High saddles such as Markum provide 360° summit views. Aid stations are fully stocked along the courses.
Two distance options are offered:
- 25K, approximately 3,800 ft elevation gain.
- 50K, approximately 7,000 ft elevation gain.
The 25K route delivers a concentrated climb toward Mount Disappointment and loops back through forest trails. The 50K extends deeper into wilderness areas with longer trail sections and additional climbing. The courses are set in shaded canyons and among towering peaks in Southern California, providing a prolonged mountain running experience that emphasizes sustained ascent, descending technical terrain, and navigation of mixed trail surfaces.
