Moonlight on Mt Ascension 12 Hour Night Trail Run
This is a 12 hour night trail event held at the Old Shooting Range Trailhead, Davis Gulch, Helena, Montana. The field is limited to 75 runners. The course is a modified figure 8 loop on Helena’s South Hills trails in the Mount Ascension and Rodney Ridge areas. Each figure 8 is 100% singletrack and covers about 11.5 miles with approximately 2,645 feet of elevation gain.
Runners have 12 hours to complete as many full figure 8 loops as possible. Completing one full figure 8 at any time during the event qualifies a participant as a finisher. Participants may rest between loops and do not have to run continuously.
Course structure and distances:
- Mt Ascension loop, 7.5 miles, 1,630 feet gain
- Rodney Ridge loop, 4.0 miles, 1,015 feet gain
The Mt Ascension loop must be run clockwise and the Rodney Ridge loop counterclockwise for official laps. The course will be marked with ribbons, signs, reflective tape, and glow sticks. An aid station at the Old Shooting Range Trailhead will offer food, HEED, Perpetuem, Hammer Gel, water, soup, coffee, and hot chocolate. Organizers note the presence of wildlife on the trails including deer, black bear, and mountain lion. The event is organized and staffed entirely by volunteers from the nonprofit Helena Ultra Runners League. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
