Event overview
The Mineshaft 10k is scheduled for April 4, 2026, near Buchanan, Virginia. The event includes an in-person 10k, a 10k Virtual Run, and a 10k and RNUTS Bundle option. The race field is capped at 100 participants.
Registration and fees
Registration opens in November. Fee levels for the in-person 10k are: $35 until November 18; $40 from November 18 to December 31; $45 from January 1 to February 20; $50 after February 20 and on race day. The virtual option is $25. Virtual registrants will receive a race shirt if registered by March 11, 2026; after that registrants receive a Mountain Junkies LLC Hoo Rag.
Course and logistics
The course uses a portion of the Hellgate 100k route (miles 47-52 run in reverse) on the Glenwood Horse Trail between Bobletts Gap Road and the Bearwallow Trailhead. Runners follow about 1 mile on a dirt road, then a steep 0.3 mile climb onto the horse trail, with roughly 5 miles on the Glenwood Horse Trail to the finish. The route is up and down until the final 1.5 miles, which include a steep downhill section. Rock gardens are located near the 5 mile mark. Parking at the day use area is limited and capped at 100 vehicles. Organizers provide shuttle buses to the start and require all runners to use the provided transit; there will be no parking or spectators at the start. In case of inclement weather the race may be run as an out and back.
Packet pickup and awards
Packet pickup is scheduled at Gilbert Chiropractic in Salem on April 2, 2026, and at Fleet Feet Sports in Roanoke on April 3, 2026. Race day pickup is at the Bearwallow Day Use Area. Awards include top three overall male and female, first place male and female masters, and medals to the top three in 13 age groups for each gender. Age brackets are: 14 and under; 15-19; 20-24; 25-29; 30-34; 35-39; 40-44; 45-49; 50-54; 55-59; 60-64; 65-69; 70 and up.
Race rules
Dogs are not permitted. Race numbers must be worn on the front and be visible. Runners must follow the marked trail and avoid short cuts. Courtesy is requested when passing. Amplified music or Bluetooth speakers are not allowed; personal music players with headphones are permitted if the runner remains aware of surroundings.
