MAD Backyard Ultra
The MAD Backyard Ultra is a fixed-time endurance running event. It is also a qualifying event for The Big Dog's Backyard Ultra.
The format requires runners to complete a 4.167-mile trail loop within one hour. This repeats every hour. A runner is eliminated if they fail to finish a loop within the hour. The event continues until only one runner completes a final loop, and that runner is declared the winner. All loops must be started on the hour from the starting corral.
Course
The loop is run in Camp Jordan Park. The surface is a mix of the park's exterior track, gravel, and grass. The course is described as flat, runnable, and non-technical.
Rules and Logistics
Crew access, tents, and canopies are allowed at the start/finish area only. Once a runner is on the course loop, they cannot receive aid from anyone and must stay on the course except for bathroom use. No pacers or artificial aids like trekking poles are permitted. Aid is provided by volunteers at the start/finish line.
Awards
All participants receive a coin. Runners who complete 100 miles receive a belt buckle. The last runner standing wins a unique award.
Additional Information
The event is part of the Chattanooga Ultra Championship Series, which includes two other races in 2027. Camping is allowed on-site, with advance notice required for RVs. Several hotels are located within a mile of the start. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
