Course, support and rules
The course is continuous single-track with mixed surfaces including dirt, clay, sandstone and scoria. Butte tops have prairie grasslands and there is minimal tree cover. There are multiple creek crossings on most distances; the 116-mile course no longer crosses the Little Missouri River. Aid stations appear approximately every 25 miles and there are about nine road checkpoints where the trail meets major back roads. The 100-mile category has a 36-hour cutoff.
Shuttle service is provided to starting areas for the 10k, half marathon and marathon. Participants in the 50-, 75- and 100-mile races must provide their own transport to the start and have a plan for pickup if they drop. Pacers are allowed for the ultramarathon distances under specified rules: foot only, must register, be at least 18 and wear an official pacer bib. Finish line provisions include snacks, drinks and awards; finishers receive medals for shorter distances and belt buckles for ultradistance finishers.
