Maah Daah Hey Trailrun
The Maah Daah Hey Trailrun is a multi-distance trail event held in the North Dakota Badlands. Runners traverse sections of the Maah Daah Hey Trail, a continuous single-track trail characterized by a mix of dirt, clay, sandstone, and scoria. The terrain includes frequent climbs and descents, with flat prairie grasslands located on top of the badlands buttes. The course features minimal cover from the elements and includes multiple creek crossings.
Participants can choose from a range of distances:
- 5 km (approx. 3.1 miles)
- 10 km (approx. 6.2 miles)
- 21.1 km (13.1 miles)
- 42.2 km (approx. 26.2 miles)
- 93 km (58 miles)
- 186 km (116 miles)
The ultra-distance events (58 and 116 miles) permit the use of pacers from specific checkpoints. Pacer support is also available for runners aged 60 and over for the full 116-mile distance. While the 5k, 10k, half marathon, and marathon routes include shuttle transportation to the starting lines from the finish area in Medora, ultra-distance runners are responsible for their own transportation to their respective starts.
Logistical support includes aid stations located approximately every 25 miles for longer distances, providing water, shaded tents, and seating. Checkpoints are also staged throughout the course where the trail intersects with back roads. All finishers of the standard marathon and shorter distances receive a medal, while those completing the 58 or 116-mile ultra distances receive a custom belt buckle.
