Locomotion Trail Runs
The Locomotion Trail Runs is a charity running event on Sunday 20 September 2026 that marks the 201st anniversary of the S&DR railway and the region's engineering history. The event is based at Locomotion, Station Road, Eaglescliffe, and uses parts of the original railway route.
Distances include:
- 10 miles: Locomotion - Preston Park - Teesdale Way - S&DR Ticket Office - return.
- 5 miles: S&DR Ticket Office - Teesdale Way - Preston Park - finish Locomotion.
The 10 mile route comprises approximately 3 miles of road and 7 miles of track. The 5 mile route comprises approximately 1.5 miles of road and 3.5 miles of track. All finishers receive medals; trophies are awarded to the male and female winners.
Entrants must be at least 10 years old; participants aged 10 to 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Neither route is suitable for standard prams; only prams designed for cross-country use are permitted. Both events are dog friendly.
Organisers have arranged free use of Eaglescliffe Station Car Park for competitors and supporters. Free rail travel from Eaglescliffe to Thornaby is provided for 5 mile runners; this involves leaving cars at Eaglescliffe, taking the train to Thornaby, and walking about 1/4 mile over Thornaby bridge to the start.
Proceeds are shared between the Great North Air Ambulance and the Motor Neurone Disease Association. Sponsors and supporters include regional rail companies and local organisations. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
