La Jornada de Las Quebradas, Socorro NM
La Jornada de Las Quebradas is a trail ultramarathon listed at 32 Miles with about 3300 feet of elevation gain. The course begins with roughly 7.5 miles of single and double track through arroyos and limestone outcrops with some short rocky and technical sections. Runners then reach a backcountry byway and follow a mix of dirt roads and 4WD tracks into a looped section that begins near mile 11 and is run counterclockwise.
The loop includes the Arroyo de la Parida, a short stretch with two yellow gates (one can be bypassed by ducking an opening on the left), a barbed wire fence opening, and a runnable five mile section that leads to the Johnson Hill aid station at about mile 17. After a brief steep sandy climb and a ridge line with views of a desert basin, the route returns to the byway and follows the final 7.5 miles back toward the start area.
Course markings will use ribbons and are described as minimal but adequate, with occasional confidence ribbons. Aid stations are minimal but supply water and snacks; participants are advised to carry any specific drink mixes or gels they use. Parking is at a small pullout off the Quebradas backcountry byway; the access road is generally drivable in most sedans though some washboard exists. A portion of race profits supports the Socorro High School cross country team and local trail maintenance. Entry fee is $75 and each entry includes a meal from the local food truck Cubish. Awards include $50 REI gift cards for first place male and female winners. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
