Event Overview

The Hawaii Kai Ultra Run - XTreme is a running event held in July on the east end of Oahu. It is described as a personal challenge rather than a competitive race. The event uses an honor system for timing and has no official chip timing or cutoff times for participants who start before noon on Saturday and remain on the course. All registered finishers receive a certificate and a medal.

Course Details

The course is a 9-mile loop that includes a section known as Heartbreak Hill. The route runs on roads open to normal traffic; participants must obey all traffic rules and are advised to run facing traffic. There are three aid stations approximately 2.5 miles apart, providing water, electrolytes, and general snacks. Public restrooms are available at each aid station location.

Logistics

The event takes place at Kalama Valley Park (555 Kealahou St.) in Hawaii Kai, near Sandy Beach. Start times are flexible over the two-day period. For the Half Marathon, 30K, and Marathon distances, there are optional group wave starts on Saturday at 6am and 7pm, and on Sunday at 6am. Alternatively, participants for all distances can choose their own start time, beginning as early as 3 AM on Saturday. All distances must be started by noon on Sunday unless special arrangements are made. The event is a qualifier for the 50 States Marathon Club. This unique 4.4-mile beach run features a 'shark' to chase along a scenic out-and-back course on Kailua Beach. Awards are given for top finishers, followed by a potluck gathering for all participants.
