Grind on the Grid Backyard Ultra
The Grind on the Grid Backyard Ultra takes place in Wingate, IN on May 9, 2026. The event uses the backyard ultra format: runners repeat a measured loop each hour and continue until only one runner completes more loops than the others.
The course length is 4 miles 880 feet. It is an out and back with a short grass trail loop near the end. Surfaces are approximately 0.5 mile gravel, 0.5 mile grass, and 3.167 miles of road with shoulders. Each loop must be completed within one hour for it to count, including the final loop.
Starts occur precisely one hour apart with 3, 2, and 1 minute warnings before each bell; all competitors must start at the bell and no late starts are allowed. The starting corral is sized to fit the entire field and remains the same size throughout the event; competitors must be in the corral at the bell. Competitors may not leave the course during a loop except to use restrooms. Portapotties will be located near the starting corral.
No non-competitors are permitted on the course, and eliminated runners may not reenter. Personal aid is not allowed during a loop though common aid stations are permitted. Artificial aids, including trekking poles, are not allowed. Organizers will track who finishes each loop but will not provide official per-loop times. Results report distance covered for each runner. Organizers are aiming for about 100 runners and will allow tent or canopy setup the night before. Registration closes Thu, May 7 at 11:59 PM ET. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
