Grand Explorers' Trail Race
The Grand Explorers' Trail Race takes place on June 20, 2026, and links Grand River Park to Grand Ravines Park via the Idema Explorers Trail in Jenison, Michigan. The event is organized by the Ottawa County Parks Foundation and Ottawa County Parks and is presented as a community-oriented, family-friendly run and walk with post-race refreshments.
Distances and options include:
- 10K Run/Walk
- 5K Run/Walk
- 1-Mile Kids' Fun Run
- 5K Run/Walk with One Dog
- 10K Run/Walk with One Dog
- Virtual 5K Run/Walk
- Virtual 10K Run/Walk
The route begins at Grand River Park and follows natural-surface trails before joining the Idema Explorers Trail along the Grand River to Grand Ravines Park. Runners encounter an old covered bridge and a short incline that offers a view of the river. The 5K turns around near this point; the 10K continues through Grand Ravines Park, passing a dog park and meadow, crossing the Idema suspension bridge, descending stairs, and returning through woods to Grand River Park.
Trail conditions vary: portions along the river are paved (about two miles for the 5K and about four miles for the 10K), while other sections are dirt or grass with roots and uneven ground and may become muddy after rain. The 10K includes some steps.
Dogs are permitted in the 5K and 10K when kept on a six-foot leash and under control. The kids' 1-mile fun run uses paved trail only; strollers are allowed for that event but not on the 5K or 10K due to narrow and difficult terrain. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
