Gopher Weedon Trail Run
The Gopher Weedon Trail Run is the 14th annual 8K trail event held at Weedon Island Preserve in St. Petersburg, Florida (1800 Weedon Dr NE). The course covers roughly eight kilometers of natural trails that pass through mangroves, salt marsh, and Florida scrub, with sections of dirt trail and boardwalk and views of Tampa Bay. The route also passes relic Indian mounds and dune ridges.
The preserve is habitat for local wildlife, including the slow-moving gopher tortoise, a threatened species for which the race is named. Organizers note that past storms have altered some trails and that mud and variable footing are possible, so participants should watch where they are going.
Registered participants receive a technical race T-shirt, professional timing and results, overall and age-group awards, refreshments and aid stations, and access to educational and cultural activities at the Cultural and Natural History Center. After the event, refreshments will be available and the Cultural and Natural History Center will be open for visitors to learn about prehistoric people and the natural environment.
There is no race day registration due to parking limitations. Advance packet pickup is available at Feet First St. Pete and race morning packet pickup takes place in the auditorium of the Cultural and Natural History Center. Pets are not permitted in the preserve. Strollers are allowed in the preserve but not on the race course. Parking is limited. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
