Gila 100 - Silver City, NM
The Gila 100 is a trail endurance event held in southwest New Mexico that offers both a 100 Mile and a 50 Mile distance. The race departs just a few miles east of Silver City near historic Fort Bayard and moves into the Gila National Forest and backcountry.
The course passes Continental Divide Trail ridgelines and reaches toward 9,000 ft, with terrain that shifts from high desert hills into ponderosa pine forest. Several sections are remote and resemble true backcountry running, while other stretches are described as rugged but runnable. Runners should expect large temperature swings between warm days and cooler nights.
Aid stations are provided at key locations and are described as well stocked with hydration, nutrition, and additional snacks and food. The event is organized locally and emphasizes a grassroots, volunteer-supported atmosphere and a small-town finish-line environment.
The Gila National Forest area was designated as a wilderness in 1924, and the course highlights the variety of landscapes found there, including long scenic stretches and ridgeline running on established trails. The event is listed as the third annual running of the Gila 100 and 50. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
