Gila 100/50
The Gila 100/50 are trail races held on National Forest land in southwest New Mexico. The flagship event is a 100 mile out-and-back trail run through the Gila National Forest; a 50 mile option follows portions of the same route.
Trails pass along rugged ridges, deep canyons, open meadows, and cooler forested sections, offering a large elevation range that allows runners to choose lower, warmer miles or higher, cooler miles. The area includes the Cosmic Campground International Dark Sky Sanctuary on National Forest land.
Seasonal conditions vary. Spring and fall typically bring crisp mornings and sunny afternoons. Summer coincides with the region’s monsoon season, which can include lightning, flash flooding, and fast-forming storms near exposed ridgelines and canyons. In winter, lower elevations often remain runnable while higher elevations can hold snow.
Logistics reflect the remote setting. Some aid stations require rough, high clearance or 4WD access, and crews are asked to remain at designated aid locations to limit traffic and congestion. The races stay on National Forest lands outside designated Wilderness boundaries to allow for aid, safety, and logistics while reducing impact on areas set aside to remain roadless.
