Furbutt's Backyard 24 Hour

Furbutt's Backyard is a Backyard ultra held on Mason Neck in the Meadowood Special Recreation Area near Lorton, at the southern end of Fairfax County, Virginia. The event uses a looped course that starts and finishes under a large horse pavilion at the corner of Gunston Road and Harley Road. The event has a 24 hours and 100 miles overall limit and the field is limited to 100 runners.

The Backyard format gives runners one hour to complete a roughly 4.167 mile loop. Runners must be back in the start corral at the top of each hour to begin the next loop or they are out of the race. The loop begins on a flat, open grassy field for about 0.7 miles, then follows dirt and crushed gravel bridle trails through mostly wooded areas and some open meadows. Elevation gain per loop is about 300 to 350 feet and total ascent/descent for the event is listed as 7,800 feet.

There is a single aid station under the horse pavilion. The club provides water with ice, Gatorade, and snacks; runners should plan to keep any additional food and beverages at their personal aid station. Crew access is allowed only at that aid station and is forbidden elsewhere on the course. Parking is in the grass field behind the pavilion, very close to the start corral.

This is a club event with no medical staff provided on course; runners are responsible for their own health and emergency care. A $25 fee is charged to help cover event expenses. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
