Elkhorn Crest 50, Sumpter OR, August 8, 2026

Elkhorn Crest is a mountain trail event held in the Elkhorn Mountains near Sumpter, Oregon. The event offers multiple distance options that follow high ridgeline trails and subalpine terrain.

  • 53 mile (about 10,500 ft ascent, about 11,000 ft descent)
  • 50K (about 6,500 ft ascent, about 7,100 ft descent)

The 53 mile course runs along the Elkhorn Mountain ridgeline through subalpine forests and grasslands with both smooth single track and rocky technical sections. The average elevation on the course is over 7,200 ft and the route provides panoramic views of Baker Valley, the Wallowas, and the Blue Mountains. The 50K begins in the old mining town of Bourne and follows much of the same route, including sections to Lost Lake and around Summit Lake.

Because of the remote mountain environment, participants must have completed a trail ultramarathon before race day. The event is cupless to minimize waste. Mandatory gear includes the ability to carry 1.5 liters of fluid, a jacket, an emergency blanket, and a headlamp with extra batteries.

Logistics center on the Sumpter fairgrounds. Bib pickup is held race morning at the fairgrounds and runners are shuttled from the fairgrounds to the start; crew drop off at the start is not permitted. Additional onsite amenities include free tent camping at the fairgrounds, paid showers that require quarters, limited RV sites, post-race food and drink for runners and volunteers, and awards for top finishers. The race is held under a special use permit in partnership with Wallowa Whitman National Forest. The Baker City high school cross country program and a local 4x4 group are beneficiaries of the event.
