Elkhorn Crest 50
The Elkhorn Crest 50 is a trail ultramarathon event taking place near Sumpter, Oregon. It features two distances: the 50 Mile and the 50K. The races run along the Elkhorn Mountain ridgeline, through sub-alpine forests and grasslands, with panoramic views of Baker Valley, the Wallowas, and the Blue Mountains.
The 50-mile course has an average elevation above 7,200 ft, with approximately 10,500 ft of climbing and 11,000 ft of descent over 53 miles. The terrain is a mix of smooth single track and rocky, technical sections. The 50K course starts in the old mining town of Bourne, Oregon, shares the initial route, and includes a trip to Lost Lake and a loop around Summit Lake. It features roughly 6,500 ft of elevation gain and 7,100 ft of loss.
The event is cupless to minimize waste. Participants are required to have completed a trail ultramarathon prior to race day. A set of mandatory gear must be carried at all times during the race, including the ability to carry 1.5 liters of fluid, a jacket, an emergency blanket, and a headlamp with extra batteries. A portion of the event's proceeds goes to the Baker City high school cross country and track team. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
