Elkhorn Crest : Sumpter, OR : August 8, 2026
Elkhorn Crest is a mountain trail event offering two distances:
- 53 miles
- 50K
The 53-mile course follows the Elkhorn Mountain ridgeline across sub-alpine forests and grasslands. It has an average elevation above 7,200 ft, about 10,500 ft of climbing and nearly 11,000 ft of descent. The trail is a mix of smooth single track and rocky, technical sections and passes panoramic views of Baker Valley, the Wallowas, and the Blue Mountains. The 50K starts in the old mining town of Bourne, follows much of the same route, includes a climb to/from the crest, visits Lost Lake, loops around Summit Lake, and has roughly 6,500 ft of gain and 7,100 ft of loss.
Logistics, rules and amenities
Due to the remote mountain environment, participants must have completed a trail ultramarathon before race day; registration is allowed before meeting that requirement but it must be fulfilled prior to the event. Mandatory gear includes the ability to carry 1.5 liters of fluid, a jacket, an emergency blanket, and a headlamp with extra batteries. The event is cupless; runners must bring their own cup or bottle.
All runners must use the shuttle from the fairgrounds to the start; crew drop-off at the start is not permitted. The finish area at the Sumpter fairgrounds offers free tent camping, coin-operated showers, limited RV sites, post-race food and beer for participants and volunteers, and awards for top finishers. Refund and cancellation policies apply. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
