Event Overview

The Elephant Challenge is a timed running event held at Salcey Forest, a Forestry England site located near Northampton. The race follows a format where participants have a 6-hour time limit to complete as many laps as they choose. The event is open to runners, hikers, and walkers of various abilities.

Course Details

The course consists of a 3.5-mile off-road loop. The terrain is composed of well-maintained pathways with no asphalt. Surfaces primarily include crushed stone or trodden forest floor. Some narrower sections may contain tree detritus and can become muddy in wet conditions.

Participants can determine their own distance by choosing the number of laps they complete:

  • 5k distance (one partial lap)
  • Half marathon (3 laps plus an additional out and back section)
  • Marathon (7 laps plus an additional out and back section)
  • Ultra distances (80k or more is possible within the time limit)

Facilities and Logistics

Salcey Forest features an on-site café and toilets. The location is accessible via the M1 motorway and is situated 18 minutes from Northampton. Public transport is available through the number 33 bus, which stops inside the forest.

Additional Information

The event is open to participants aged 16 and over. Specific registration options are available for canicross runners who wish to run with their dogs on short leads. The event also supports rucking. Finishers receive a medal, flapjack, and a drink, though participants may opt for a tree token instead of a medal to have a tree planted in their name. A 21.1 km off road trail race on 5 July 2026 along The Ridgeway between Wendover and Princes Risborough, with fully marked navigation, two aid station visits and a 4 hour limit.

A six hour endurance run on a scenic 5k loop at Marston Lodge in Marston Trussell. Fully chip timed with solo, pair, and team entry options so runners complete as many laps as they can in six hours.

A multi-terrain 5km in Fermyn Woods Country Park on Wednesday 8th July, part of the Northants 5K Series. Limited parking, bespoke finishers medals and a virtual completion option are available; entries close 23:59 on Tuesday 7th July.

Trail races from 8 km up to a 50 km ultra around Princes Risborough, using ancient beech woods, chalk downs and Ridgeway sections with marked routes and fuel outposts.
