Event Overview

The Elephant Challenge is a timed running event held at Salcey Forest, a Forestry England site located near Northampton. The race follows a format where participants have a 6-hour time limit to complete as many laps as they choose. The event is open to runners, hikers, and walkers of various abilities.

Course Details

The course consists of a 3.5-mile off-road loop. The terrain is composed of well-maintained pathways with no asphalt. Surfaces primarily include crushed stone or trodden forest floor. Some narrower sections may contain tree detritus and can become muddy in wet conditions.

Participants can determine their own distance by choosing the number of laps they complete:

  • 5k distance (one partial lap)
  • Half marathon (3 laps plus an additional out and back section)
  • Marathon (7 laps plus an additional out and back section)
  • Ultra distances (80k or more is possible within the time limit)

Facilities and Logistics

Salcey Forest features an on-site café and toilets. The location is accessible via the M1 motorway and is situated 18 minutes from Northampton. Public transport is available through the number 33 bus, which stops inside the forest.

Additional Information

The event is open to participants aged 16 and over. Specific registration options are available for canicross runners who wish to run with their dogs on short leads. The event also supports rucking. Finishers receive a medal, flapjack, and a drink, though participants may opt for a tree token instead of a medal to have a tree planted in their name. A six hour lap based event from Braybrooke Taproom on well surfaced trails along the Griffin Trail and Brampton Valley Way, with free parking, onsite toilets and a taproom for post run refreshments.

A muddy 5 km obstacle course at Willen Lake in Milton Keynes with timed waves, a minimum fundraising target and on-site facilities. Open to participants aged 13 and over and organised by Cancer Research UK.

Trail running at Wendover Woods on 7 June 2026 offering a half marathon, a 10k and a junior run on hilly forest trails with route maps, an on site cafe and spectator attractions.

Coombe Hill Fell Race in Wendover on 7 June 2026 is a 7 km BS Category fell run with a steep climb and 220 m of ascent. Registration is at the Shoulder of Mutton pub and entry includes a post race pint with a reduced fee for FRA members.
