Chocorua Mountain Race
The Chocorua Mountain Race is a 23K mountain event in Tamworth, New Hampshire, that starts and finishes from Scott Road. The course accumulates about 4,800 feet of climbing and combines open field, singletrack, and exposed mountain trails.
The route begins with a fast, flat section across a field before reaching singletrack at the Hammond Trailhead. Runners ascend 2.8 miles and roughly 1,900 feet on the Hammond Trail to the Liberty Trail junction. A left turn onto the Liberty Trail leads to a descent of more than 1,600 feet over 2.5 miles to the on course aid station.
After the aid station the course follows Forest Service singletrack to the Brook Trail and then makes a loop up and over the 3,478 foot summit of Mount Chocorua. Trails on the summit section include rocks, roots, boulders, steep ledges, and stream crossings with very cold mountain water. The route then descends off the ledges, returns via the Liberty Trail to the Hammond Trail junction, and descends the final 2.8 miles and about 1,900 feet back to Scott Road.
Mandatory gear is required and is checked at bib pickup. Required items include one liter of fluids, 400 calories of food, a windbreaker or rain shell, and a space blanket or emergency foil blanket. The event is cupless; aid stations do not provide disposable cups, so participants must carry their own hydration system.
The race is part of the White Mountain Endurance Cup series, which comprises four sub ultra distance races. Completing at least three of the four events qualifies a participant as an official cup finisher and earns a commemorative medal. Series awards include top overall male and female scorers and podium prizes for the top three men and women. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
