Challenge the Shield Adventure Run
The 4th annual Challenge the Shield takes place in Parry Sound, Ontario on May 2-3, 2026, at the Georgian Nordic Outdoor Activity Centre. Teams of two run or trek to as many of 36 checkpoints as they choose across Canadian Shield terrain, including windswept pines, lakes and granite rock. Each checkpoint has a difficulty rating and point value; teams plan routes and attempt checkpoints to maximize points within the time limit. The event uses a points-based, choose-your-own-adventure course format with three hour and six hour options.
Distances:
- 6-hour Adventure Run: up to 36 checkpoints, ~35 km, maximum 2500 points.
- 3-hour Adventure Run: up to 20 checkpoints, ~17.5 km, maximum 1250 points.
Categories for the six hour include Coed, Male, Female and Masters (average age over 50). The three hour categories include Open, Juniors (ages 13-19) and Family (one adult plus one to three children under 13). Challenge stickers are awarded for reaching 2000, 1500 and 1000 points; teams reaching a perfect 2500 points will be recognized as Ontario's Toughest Navigation Racers. Entry is by team; family teams may include two to four members. There is a 100 team cap. Entry fees cover two customized race maps, host site day-use fees, customized swag, a participation sticker, post-race pizza per team and a 2026 membership for race insurance. The 2026 Event Guide will be available in early April. An optional training day on May 2 includes a one hour training course and a Team Canada 5K navigation challenge with sport-ident timing; training fee is $25 per person.
