Carnaween

Donegal, Ireland • 23 May 2026

Event Details

The Carnaween event takes place in County Donegal. It features a long course of approximately 7.8 km with 514 m of climb. The terrain is described as easy, but the summit is steep with loose rock. A short course option follows the same initial route for about 2.5 km before turning back.

The event is part of the Ulster Championship and North West League. It has an entry limit of 250 participants.

Mandatory Kit

All runners must bring the mandatory kit (Level B - Standard) to the race. The final decision on what must be carried during the race will be made on the day based on conditions. The required items are:

  • Waterproof jacket
  • Hat or buff
  • Gloves
  • Whistle
  • Charged mobile phone with emergency number stored
  • Foil blanket, bivvy bag, or equivalent

Runners should have the means to carry all kit. Failure to have the required items may lead to denied entry or disqualification. Random checks may be carried out. GPS devices are not allowed. The course is only marked at major junctions.

Venue and Access

The car park, race start, and finish are at Letterbarrow Football Club. It is approximately a 15-minute drive from Donegal Town and 10 minutes from Letterbarrow village. Access is via narrow rural side roads with limited passing places, so car sharing is strongly encouraged. Participants are asked not to arrive before 11:00 AM on race day.

The open mountain section is on private sheep farmland. Participants must respect this permission by not bringing dogs on the course and using marked stiles to cross fences.

Schedule and Post-Race

Registration opens on race day at 11:00 AM at the football club. An early start is at 11:30 AM. The main start for the long course and juniors is at 12:00 PM. No entries are available on race day.

Post-race refreshments and prize giving are at Letterbarrow Football Club. Prizes are awarded for the top three male and female finishers on the long course and for the first male and female juniors. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
