About the race

Wood You Rather is a checkpoint run held at Mt. Tabor Park in Portland. Instead of a pre-set course, participants receive a map at the start showing marked checkpoints and choose their own routes and order of visiting those checkpoints. Runners have two hours to collect as many checkpoints as possible and return to the finish; winners are those who collect the most checkpoints and record the fastest times.

The event offers solo and team options. The Solo category is for individual competitors. Teams must have at least three and no more than six members; teams may run together or split up. A team’s time is the average of its members’ times, and the team’s checkpoint count is based on the lowest number collected by any team member. If any team member finishes after the event cutoff, the team is recorded as a Did Not Finish.

Course choices affect distance and climbing; depending on route selection participants can expect to run around 5 to 8+ miles with 800–1000+ feet of elevation gain. Each finisher receives a Wood You Rather mug; top male, top female, top non-binary, and top team earn prizes. Donuts and coffee are provided at the finish. The event acknowledges that it takes place on the traditional homelands of the Cowlitz, Clackamas, and Atfalai tribes. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
