WinterRock - Independence, KS
WinterRock is a trail running event on January 2, 2027, organized by FlatRock Race Series at the Outlet Channel Shelter by Elk City Lake. The course is a technical, mostly single-track out-and-back on the Elk River Hiking Trail with forested sections, limestone bluffs, rock formations, and scenic vistas. Medallions and post-race food including Frito Chili Pie will be provided.
Distances offered include:
- 25K
- 12K
- Triple Crown options including the FlatRock 101K or 101 Mile and the FlatRock 50K series
Aid on course is very limited. The 25K has three aid stations and the 12K has one turnaround station; these stations are unmanned and provide water only. No cups are available, so runners must carry their own water and any food or fuel they need. Packet pickup and race staging take place at the Outlet Channel Group Shelter on the north side of the Elk City Lake dam.
The event is part of the FlatRock Triple Crown series, which awards a special finishers item to participants who complete all three series races across the year. Volunteer and military discounts are offered. Deferral and transfer credit are available on a sliding scale before the event date. Trekking poles and leashed dogs are permitted. Race rules require no littering and adherence to race management directions. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
