Event Overview
WinterRock is a trail running event held on January 2, 2027, in Independence, Kansas. The race serves as a kickoff event for the new year and is organized by the FlatRock Race Series. Participants navigate a technical, mostly single-track course along the Elk River Hiking Trail. The terrain features unique limestone bluffs, rock formations, forest paths, and scenic vistas.
The event follows a Fat-Ass style format with limited, unmanned support on the course. While the race is self-sufficient in nature, finishers receive medallions, and post-race food such as Frito Chili Pie is provided at the staging area. The start and finish lines are located at the Outlet Channel Shelter on the north side of the Elk City Lake dam.
Distances and Series
WinterRock offers several race distances and serves as the first stage of the FlatRock Triple Crown series.

- 25K: A longer out-and-back course featuring three aid stations.
- Triple Crown with 101 Mile: Registration for three races including WinterRock 25K, FlatRock 101 Mile, and FlatRock 50K.

Logistics and Regulations
Aid stations are spaced approximately 3.5 to 4 miles apart and provide only water. This is a cupless event, and participants are required to carry their own handheld bottles and any necessary nutritional fuel. Packet pickup takes place at the Outlet Channel Group Shelter on the morning of the race.
Trekking poles are permitted during the run. Dogs are also allowed to accompany participants provided they remain on a leash at all times. The course is accurately measured, and runners must follow the marked path to avoid disqualification. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
