Event Overview

The Winter Downs 200 is a continuous trail running event covering 200 miles (321 km) through the south of England. The race follows a large loop that incorporates several established long-distance paths, including the North Downs Way, Vanguard Way, South Downs Way, Wayfarers Walk, and St Swithuns Way. The course features approximately 22,500 feet (6,800 meters) of total elevation gain.

Participants have a 96-hour time limit to complete the single-stage course. The terrain consists of roughly 80% trail and 20% road. Given the December timing, runners experience approximately 16 hours of darkness each day. The event is held under a UK Athletics permit granted through the TRA.

Route Details

The race begins and ends at Juniper Hall near Dorking. The course travels east on the North Downs Way before heading south on the Vanguard Way to reach Alfriston. From there, runners travel west along the South Downs Way to Exton. The route then turns northeast via the Wayfarers Walk and St Swithuns Way to Farnham, eventually returning to the North Downs Way to complete the loop back to the start.

Logistics and Support

There are four support locations along the route:

  • Three major aid stations offering hot meals, drop bag access, and sleeping facilities.
  • One safety point providing hot food and drinks with a limited stopping time.

Runners are permitted to have a personal crew at specific designated points, but pacers are not allowed. A mandatory kit list is in effect, and all participants must carry a GPS device with the provided route files as the course is not marked with traditional race signs. Live tracking is provided for all competitors throughout the event.

Entry Requirements

Registration is limited to 100 starters. Applicants must submit a summary of their previous running or multi-sport experience for approval. Organizers typically look for completion of at least one single-stage 100-mile trail race or equivalent experience in self-supported winter or mountain environments. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
