Windy Hill Fell Race
The Windy Hill Fell Race is a winter fell race that starts and finishes at the Rams Head Inn in Denshaw, Oldham (Ripponden Road OL3 5UN). The course is approximately 12 miles long with about 2100 feet of ascent, running out toward Hollingworth Lake, climbing to Blackstone Edge, following a high moorland traverse on the Pennine Way to the mast at Windy Hill, then dropping to the Ogden Valley before the final climb back to the Rams Head.
Participants must be at least 17 years old. Entry is limited to 300 runners; entry fees listed are £16 for those affiliated to FRA, LDWA or TRA and £18 for non affiliated runners, with entries on the day charged at £20 if the limit is not reached. Entries open 29 August 2026 and close 18 February 2027.
Because this is a winter event, full FRA kit is required. Required kit includes a waterproof jacket and trousers, hat and gloves (a buff is acceptable for a hat), a traditional map and compass (digital maps allowed only if carried with a paper map and no digital compass), a whistle, emergency food, and a water bottle of at least 500 ml. Optional extra clothing may be carried for conditions on the day. Some checkpoints will supply water and sweets. A printed A3 map is available for purchase.
