Walter Raleigh Round
The Walter Raleigh Round is a trail running and walking event located in Devon, centering around the coastal town of Budleigh Salterton. The event offers two distinct distances that traverse the countryside associated with the childhood of Sir Walter Raleigh. Participants can choose between the following distances:
- Half Marathon (13.6 miles)
- Third Marathon (8.5 miles)
The Half Marathon course follows a loop through the Otter valley and along the Jurassic Coast. The terrain is varied, consisting of quiet back lanes, unsurfaced county roads, and footpaths. It also incorporates a section of a dismantled railway and includes significant elevation changes at High Peak.
The Third Marathon follows a similar route as the longer distance for the first section. At the river Otter, it diverges to avoid the steepest climbs at High Peak and the coastal stretches. This route stays on the riverbank path before rejoining the main course at a secondary river crossing.
The event is open to both runners and walkers. The organizers provide a fully marked course with marshals stationed at key locations. Aid stations are placed along the routes, with one available for the Third Marathon and two for the Half Marathon. Medical cover is present on-site. All finishers receive a solid oak coaster upon completion of their distance. Participants have the option to wear 16th-century fancy dress.
