Vol State
Vol State is scheduled for July 7 to 17, 2027 in Sand Mountain, Georgia. The organizer describes the route as 314 miles, beginning with a ferry crossing from Missouri to Kentucky and finishing at "the Rock" on Sand Mountain. The course follows highways and backroads through small towns, over hills and mountains, and across rivers.
Participants are expected to be self reliant. The event has no staffed aid stations; runners must plan for food, water, rest, and shelter while moving between towns. The description notes July heat and humidity in Tennessee as a factor to consider. Check ins are required: entrants must report their location by phone at 0730 and 1930 each day; texting is acceptable. Failure to check in may prompt a search. Runners may drop out at any time by calling in to request transport to the car park; transportation will be provided as soon as feasible.
Registration is offered with two primary options:
- 500K Bus + Hotel
- 500K Only
The higher cost bus and hotel option includes a parking spot at the finish from the day before the event until the entrant finishes or withdraws, a bus seat along the course to Union City with lunch provided en route, a double occupancy bed in Union City the night before the race, and a bus ride from Union City to the ferry on race morning. All entries include the final supper meal.
An initial lottery and a maintained wait list are part of registration; the initial lottery date listed is August 1, 2026. Withdrawals are replaced from the wait list and refunds follow a declining schedule: 90% refund until December 24, then 80% January through March, 70% April and May, and 50% in June. Refunds for replaced entrants are mailed as paper checks to the address on the entrant's UltraSignup account. The organizers state that crew vehicles are not allowed.
