About the race
The Vallecito Lake Heavy Half Marathon is a loop course around Vallecito Reservoir in the San Juan Mountains near Bayfield, Colorado. The course covers approximately 14 miles with about 1,000 feet of climbing and includes a run across Vallecito Dam and a roughly 0.5 mile segment that crosses private property on a designated right-of-way.
The route surface is mixed: about 4 miles paved road, 3.5 miles singletrack trail, and 6.5 miles dirt or gravel road. Runners follow marked roads and trails with mile markers at each mile and prominent signage at turns. There are four aid stations beginning around mile 3.5 that offer water and Tailwind; the last three aid stations also provide snacks. Vault toilets are located near miles 2.5, 8.5, and 12.5, and additional porta-potties are available at the start and finish. The event operates as a cupless race; participants should bring their own bottle or soft flask.
Safety measures include course cones, course marshals, and county sheriff presence at a key intersection. Headphones in both ears, dogs, and strollers are not allowed. Parking on event day requires a PRID use pass; participants may purchase the day pass option during registration. Timing is provided with an RFID chip on the race bib. All revenue above event costs is directed to local nonprofits. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
