Ultra England 50
The Ultra England 50 is a 54 mile point to point ultra running event across the Lake District National Park, starting in Keswick and finishing in Ulverston. The route follows the Cumbria Way and may, subject to final permissions and weather, detour onto higher ground to include Great Gable and Scafell Pike. The event lists an elevation figure of 2607 m. Entry is limited to 250 places and the overall cut-off is 20 hours; the published entry fee is £139.
The race uses GB Race Tracker for live online GPS tracking and provides a tracker device that is mandatory. The event is operated under UKA licence via the Trail Running Association with UTMB performance index and ITRA mountain points pending. Participants must meet qualifying criteria: be at least 20 years old, be in good health, have completed an organised marathon-distance event before race day, and have mountain experience including navigation and map reading.
There are five main checkpoints located at Borrowdale (Rosthwaite), Wasdale Head, Langdale (Chapel Stile), Coniston and Birchbank (near Ulverston). Several checkpoints have restrictions on supporter and crew access because of narrow roads and limited parking; these restrictions are enforced and non-compliance can affect a runner’s result.
A comprehensive mandatory kit list is enforced and checked; required items include a GPS/watch with high and low level GPX access, waterproof coat and trousers with sealed seams, headtorch and backup light, charged mobile phone, 1 litre minimum water, warm layers, whistle, survival/bivi bag and emergency food (min 250 kcal). A dropbag service is available for finish collection with maximum dimensions and weight limits, and optional prebooked coach return to Keswick is offered for a fee.
