Turnhouse Hill Race
The Turnhouse Hill Race is a traditional hill race held from Flotterstone Car Park within the Pentland Hills Regional Park. The senior event covers 5.2 km with about 310 metres of ascent. There is also a shorter junior race for ages 10 to 15 covering 2.2 km with about 160 metres of ascent; the junior race is free and is a turn up on the day event.
The route is mostly on track but the main ascent and the descent to and from the summit are steep and the final climb goes through heather. Hill running shoes are advised. The race course is marshalled so a compass is not required, but runners are asked to carry full body cover appropriate for the weather and a whistle. Organisers advise printing a copy of the map as an additional reference.
Facilities at Flotterstone are limited. There are very limited toilets behind the Pentland café and no changing or showering facilities. Parking at the Flotterstone car park is limited; marshals will assist with parking and car sharing is encouraged. Additional parking may be available at the Flotterstone Inn subject to their conditions. Bus services can bring participants to nearby stops but some routes require a short jog to the start.
