The TarDevil 30-mile Bushwhack
The TarDevil 30-mile Bushwhack is a point-to-point training run between UNC Chapel Hill and Duke University in Durham, with the route run in either direction. The event uses roughly 90% trail or off-road access and follows forests, fields and streams that connect the two towns and campuses. It is described as a wander rather than a fixed race course.
The annual training run began in 2018. It is typically held in March on the first Saturday and is organized as a non-organized training run facilitated by TarDevil Adventures Inc., a 501c3 based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Participation is at the runner's own risk; the organizers note the course contains many challenging sections and lists risks that include permanent injury, drowning or death.
Registration has sold out every year, and in 2024 twenty runners completed the full distance. Proceeds from the event cover insurance, finishers' shirts and aid station supplies. The run is framed as a local community activity linking UNC and Duke and emphasizes off-road route choices rather than continuous paved connections.
