The Stoop
The Stoop is a senior fell race organised by Wharfedale Harriers around Penistone Hill. The advertised course distance is 4.9 miles with 700 ft of ascent and is waymarked as a BM grade route. The senior race is part of the Woodentops Race Series alongside Withins Skyline and Stanbury Splash, and chip timing will be used for these events.
The route starts from the quarry bottom at Penistone and follows a track past Drop Farm where the path narrows. At a footpath sign the route turns right onto a track toward Harbour Lodge; just before the lodge competitors cross the beck by a dedicated footpath and follow the path around the lodge. The course then climbs through heather to the Standing Stone, loops round the Stoop, and returns down through boggy ground to rejoin the track at Drop Farm. Runners then cross the road and finish on the cricket pitch. Competitors are asked to use the right hand footbridge at the side of Harbour Lodge because the left hand bridge is unsafe.
The senior race is for over 16s only. Entry details note an online pre-entry fee and an on the day entry fee. Team entries of three are free. All entrants receive a Santa hat and there will be free tea, coffee and biscuits. Prize giving takes place outside the cricket hut after the race; prize categories include first ten men and first ten ladies, top vets in age bands 40, 50, 60 and 70, top three U21, spot prizes and first men’s and ladies’ teams, three to count. Full kit may be required for safety for example waterproof jacket with hood, leggings, hat and gloves; if kit is declared necessary then entrants without required kit may be prevented from running.
