The Stoop

The Stoop is a senior fell race organised by Wharfedale Harriers at Penistone Hill Country Park. The senior race forms part of the Woodentops Race Series alongside Withins Skyline and Stanbury Splash and uses chip timing.

The course is listed as 4.9 mile with about 700 ft of climb (BM). The route starts from the quarry bottom on Penistone, follows the track past Drop Farm, then turns onto a footpath to Harbour Lodge. Runners cross the beck, follow the path around Harbour Lodge, and climb through heather to the Standing Stone known as the Stoop. The route rounds the Stoop, returns down boggy sections to the track at Drop Farm, crosses the road and finishes on the cricket pitch.

Safety and practical notes include a requirement to use the right hand footbridge at the side of Harbour Lodge because the left hand bridge is unsafe. Full kit may be required especially for seniors; suggested items are a waterproof jacket with hood, leggings, hat and gloves. If kit is required, runners without it may not be allowed to run.

Registration and the event base are at the Cricket Hut, West End Cricket Club, Penistone Hill (GR 023 363). The senior race is for over 16s only. Entry is available online for £9 or on the day for £10. Teams of three enter free. All entrants receive a Santa hat and there is free coffee and biscuits. Prizes are awarded across overall, veteran age groups, under 21 and team categories; one prize per person and winners should be present to collect. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
