The Sand Monster 6 Hour Ultra
The Sand Monster is a timed trail event held at Sesquicentennial State Park in Columbia, South Carolina. Participants have a 6-hour window to complete as many laps as possible on a designated course. The event is open to runners, hikers, and walkers of all experience levels.
Course Details
The race takes place on a 3.5-mile loop consisting of a mix of single-track and double-track trails. Each loop features 270 feet of elevation gain. While the event is named for a sandy section on one of the two main climbs, much of the course is covered with pine needles over solid ground. The trails are mostly shaded by trees and will be clearly marked for the duration of the event.
Event Format and Rules
The timed format allows participants to manage their own pace and distance. The only requirement to be considered a finisher is the completion of at least one 3.5-mile loop within the 6-hour limit. Results are determined by the total number of completed laps. If multiple participants finish with the same number of laps, their placement is decided by the finish time of their last completed lap. Any lap in progress after the 6-hour mark is reached will not be counted toward the total distance.
Amenities and Recognition
The event features a supportive environment with a pre-race briefing and a raffle held during the awards ceremony. Participants receive several items, including:
- A technical trucker hat
- A personalized bib number
- An inspiration card from a local student
Awards are presented to the top four overall male and female finishers, as well as the top male and female grand masters in the 50+ age category. Special recognition is also given through unique honors such as the Spirit, Honey Badger, and Far Out awards. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
