The Sand Monster - 6 Hour Ultra, March 21, 2027
The Sand Monster is a six hour timed trail race held at Sesquicentennial State Park in Columbia, SC. Athletes have a six hour window to run, hike, or walk as many laps as they wish on a 3.5 mile loop that features about 270 feet of elevation gain per lap. The course combines single track and double track with one longer sandy climb, trails covered in pine needles, and extensive tree cover; the route is marked.
To be recorded as a finish an athlete must complete at least one full 3.5 mile loop within the six hour limit. All laps must be completed before the six hour cutoff; results list the number of full laps and use the finish order of the last completed lap to break ties. Participants can stop after any lap without a penalty.
Event services include packaged race bibs and swag, with each starter and volunteer receiving a Boco Gear technical trucker hat unless registered very late. Each starter receives a personalized bib and an inspiration card created by local fifth graders. There are unique awards for the top four overall male and female finishers, top male and female grand masters (50+), and special awards such as Spirit, Honey Badger, and Far Out.
