The Sand Monster
The Sand Monster is a timed trail event held on March 21, 2027 at Sesquicentennial State Park in Columbia, SC. Athletes have six hours to run, hike, or walk as many laps as they choose on a marked loop course.
The course is a 3.5-mile loop with about 270 feet of elevation gain per lap. Runners will find a mix of single track and double track, shaded sections, pine-needle covered trails, and one longer sandy climb. Laps are counted only if completed within the six-hour race window.
A finish requires completion of at least one full loop. All laps must be completed within six hours; placement among athletes with the same lap total is determined by the finish order of the last completed lap.
Event services include package pickup before the race, pre-race briefing, multiple port-o-johns on site, course marking, and on-course support. Each starter and many volunteers receive a Boco Gear technical trucker hat and a personalized bib; starters also receive a personalized inspiration card prepared by local fifth graders. Awards are given to the top four overall men and women, with separate awards for top male and female grand masters (50+). Additional recognitions include spirit and specialty awards and a post-event raffle.
