The OMM : 57th edition
The OMM is a self reliant two day mountain marathon taking place in Talnotry, Scotland on 24 and 25 October 2026. Teams of two (teams of three are also permitted) navigate from map and compass only, carry all kit for an overnight campsite and must sleep in the same tent on Saturday night. Competitors receive course maps at the start each day and plan their own routes between controls.
There are linear (line) courses where checkpoints must be visited in order and the fastest time wins, and score courses where teams choose which checkpoints to visit within a time limit and earn points. Example linear course distances (straight line) are listed below:
- Elite: Day 1 47 km / 2200 m, Day 2 38 km / 1800 m
- A Course: Day 1 36 km / 1650 m, Day 2 29 km / 1350 m
- B Course: Day 1 25 km / 1100 m, Day 2 20 km / 900 m
Score courses have fixed time limits per day (Long, Medium, Short) and are measured by hours on the hill rather than fixed distances. Competitors must carry mandatory equipment including waterproofs, headtorch, compass, map, insulated sleeping system, tent with sewn in groundsheet (one tent per team), cooking stove and food for 36 hours. GPS or mobile devices may be carried but must not be used for navigation except in an emergency; a mobile phone is required for emergency use.
The event is organised by volunteers, operated on a not for profit basis, and places around 100 controls across a 150–300 km2 area each year. Ecological assessment is undertaken for each event area. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
