The Observatory Loop Relay
The event is a 4 x mile trail relay held on the Observatory Loop in Griffith Park. Teams of two alternate laps around the loop, handing off a baton at the end of each lap. Each team completes four laps in total so each runner completes two one mile laps with a rest between their runs.
The loop is exactly one mile, combines the East and West Observatory trails, and starts and finishes just off Fern Dell Road opposite the Trails Cafe. The trail footing is described as smooth and the slopes are fairly gradual in both directions.
Because the race takes place after sunset, participants are required to run with a headlamp or other light source. There is a designated Exchange Zone where batons must be handed off; the Exchange Zone is located where the East and West trails meet. Teams are advised to select a spot in that area for their handoffs. More than 100 teams may use the exchange area during the event.
Registration options include signing up with a partner or signing up individually to be placed with a partner. All finishers receive a branded baton. There are separate check-in tables for Mixed Gender, Men’s, and Women’s teams, and the runner who finishes second should wear the bib with the timing chip on the back.
Early packet pickup is available at REI Burbank on February 24 and limited pickup is available on race day. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
