The Naturalist - Franklin, NC
The Naturalist Trail Race is part of Outdoor 76's Fall Celebration and uses sections of the historic Bartram Trail near downtown Franklin. The course leads from town to Wallace Branch and includes a sustained ascent toward Wayah Bald. All participants receive a custom pint glass.
Distances offered
- 25K: roughly 5,500 feet elevation gain, finishes atop Wayah Bald.
- 50K: more than 8,500 feet gain, loops Wayah Bald and returns to the start.
Hydration and nutrition are available at multiple stations stocked with water, electrolyte drinks, fruit, energy bars and other snacks. Runners tackling the Wayah Bald ascent are advised to carry at least 1 liter of water. Aid stations are located at Mile 3.5 (Wallace Branch, limited aid), Mile 9 (Harrison Gap), Mile 14.5 (Wayah Bald summit), Mile 19.5 (Harrison Gap return, 50K only), and Mile 25 (Wallace Branch return, 50K only).
Field size is capped at 150 entrants combined. Parking at Wayah Bald is limited and the event offers a free shuttle for 25K runners to return to the start. Cutoffs are in place for safety: Mile 9 at 11:00 AM, Mile 14.5 at 2:00 PM, and Mile 19.5 at 3:00 PM; missing these cutoffs may jeopardize completion.
Check-in is available Friday, October 2 at Outdoor 76 and on-site the morning of the event. Post-race activities include live music, craft beer, food trucks and awards. Important policy: no refunds or deferrals. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
