The Mudder
The Mudder is an outdoor mud run held on a working sheep and beef farm in the Rangitikei area near Marton. The course uses the farm's natural terrain, including hills, springs, swamps, dams and bogs, and also includes some man-made obstacles. Entrants share the course with farm animals such as sheep, cattle and horses.
Some characteristic features from past years include a hands-and-knees slog through a spring-fed bog, a spongy floating island known as "Rubber Island," a large old tree called "Monster Mac," and multiple slip-and-slide sections. The event offers two course lengths:
- 3 km short course
- 5 km full course
Registrations and race day operations are based at the Rangitikei Farmstay woolshed. Entrants receive a wrist band race number and may use a secure bag drop inside the covered yards; bag drop rules limit one item per entrant. There are individual changing rooms in the woolshed, pre-wash rinse areas and warm showers. Food and beverage sales are on site but the event operates cash only. Entrants are advised to bring warm undergarments and a change of clothes due to cold water and mud, and tape for shoes can help with difficult mud sections.
Entries may be entered as businesses, families or individuals. Costumes are welcome and prizes are awarded for best dressed teams and individuals. The event promotes the theme "Move your body, Shift your mind." Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
