About the race
Reservoir Dog is a backyard ultra held at Marton Reservoir on a repeated 6.706 km loop. Runners complete the same loop every hour; the field continues until only one runner remains. The course mixes graded walking track and single-track mountain bike trail, with 84 m of elevation gain per lap and a mostly natural surface. Lap direction is decided by a coin flip before each lap; competitors do not choose direction.
Each lap must be completed within the hour between bells. Crews camp in a designated paddock and may not accompany runners on course; any small treats placed on course are at the organisers discretion. The event records only one winner with all other participants recorded as DNF. Entries are offered as solo or two-person teams, with team rules allowing either teammate to run any lap and a single bib handed between team members at the kennel.
The team category ends once five solo runners remain, after which only solo competitors continue. Entry fees stated are $50 NZD for solo entry and $100 NZD per team. Organisers provide basic facilities at the paddock including drinking water, toilets, lighting at night, and a communal fire. Competitors are asked to bring provisions for their time on site and to contribute a plate of food to share. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
