The Mammoth

The Mammoth is a long-distance trail race located in Mammoth Lakes, California. Organized by trailfest., the event takes place within the National Forest and operates under special use permission from the Forest Service. The course is designed as a loop that starts and finishes in Mammoth Lakes, circumnavigating a 760,000-year-old caldera while connecting various mountain communities in the Eastern Sierra.

The route traverses diverse terrain, including high desert landscapes, volcanic rock expanses, and the world’s largest continuous Jeffrey pine forest. Participants encounter several landmarks such as alpine lakes, abandoned mines, and the Tufa towers of Mono Lake. The course also features the remote Glass Mountains and includes summits of Mammoth Mountain at an elevation of 11,053 feet.

The event has a total time limit of 109 hours, with the final cutoff occurring at 10:00 pm on the fifth day of the event schedule. Cash prizes are awarded to the top three female and male finishers. Mandatory check-in procedures include a medical check and the pickup of a satellite tracker.

Course conditions can include high-altitude environments and variable weather, with past editions experiencing snow on the summits.
