The Iron Turtle - Coker, AL
The Iron Turtle is a Last Runner Standing backyard ultra held at Lake Lurleen in Coker, AL on November 14, 2026. The event uses a basic backyard format: runners complete a 4 mile loop each hour and start each lap on the hour, continuing until they stop.
This race separates competitors into male and female divisions; a male and a female Last Runner Standing will be crowned. Organizers emphasize personal records. Runners who miss a cut-off may continue unofficially to reach a mileage goal, and that mileage can be recorded on Ultrasignup. Runners who achieve a PR receive an Iron Turtle sticker. A rubber chicken mascot announces the start of each lap.
After 12 hours there is an optional shoot out if all remaining runners agree; in that case one final loop can determine the winner. Organizers are also considering a leap frog tag team division in which teammates alternate loops.
The course is a well groomed trail loop of 4 miles, about 270 feet of elevation gain per lap, with roughly 95% single track and 5% paved road. The start/finish is at a pavilion in front of the main bridge where a staffed aid station provides food, electrolytes, and lunch and dinner options. The park offers camping, fishing, swimming, hot showers, new facilities, and nearby space for parking or tents. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
