The MTC Hafren Ultra
The MTC Hafren Ultra is a point to point ultra marathon held on 16 February 2028 and forms Day 1 of the MTC Severn Challenge. The course leads to the source of the River Severn via a near four mile mountain trek up Plynlimon, then follows the river path back toward Rhyd-y-benwch and finishes at the Mid Wales Arts Centre, Maesmawr, Caersws, Newtown. The published distance is 27 miles with about 872 m of ascent and 1,069 m of descent.
The route includes exposed upland terrain and boggy sections on Plynlimon, marshalled at the river source, and much of the Severn Path can be overgrown or unsigned. Competitors are advised to use GPX files for navigation. The event has two checkpoint stations; checkpoint food options include vegan and gluten free choices, and competitors may supply labelled personal food bags if they need other dietary options. Events are cup free so runners should bring a reusable cup.
Entry is non refundable and standard solo entry is £80.00; entries may be deferred to the next year for a £15 fee if done within four weeks of the event. Participants must be at least 20 years old on the day of the race and are responsible for their own travel to the start and from the finish. The organisers require a minimum progress rate of 4.0 miles per hour; those below this pace may be removed from the race. Mandatory kit includes a backpack, Ordnance Survey Map 150 or downloaded map, compass or GPS, whistle, mobile phone and a basic first aid kit.
