The Grizzly and Cub races : Seaton, 14 March 2027
The Grizzly meeting in Seaton comprises two running races that start and finish on the Esplanade. The event date is 14 March 2027 and this is the 39th running. Entry is limited across both races combined; there is no separate allocation for each race.
Distances
- 20 miles full Grizzly, over 3,000 feet ascent
- 9 miles Cub
The 20 mile course includes sections of pebble beach totalling well over a mile, two bogs where runners can be waist deep in water and mud, and a steep path known as the Stairway to Heaven up Hooken Cliff. Some descents are steep and often very slippery. Typical finishing time is around a marathon time or longer in poor conditions.
Runners should expect hard physical effort, adverse weather, uneven ground, mud, exposed tree roots and branches, water hazards such as streams and puddles, and agricultural land with farm animals. The race requires participants to run most of the route and to maintain an average pace of at least 19 minutes per mile to meet shortcut and cut off points; these are strictly enforced and failure to comply has consequences for safety and insurance.
Logistics and rules include a ballot for places (open 28 September to 11 October, drawn 15 October 2026), transfers allowed until 28 February, no headphones permitted, cup-less water stations, no race t shirt included with entry, bib collection at the race weekend, chip timing, nine water stations, over 300 marshals, full medical cover, finish refreshments and medals for finishers. The event holds ARC licence 27/0029 and names Seaton and District Hospital League of Friends as its official charity partner. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
