The First Howl: Trails & Nog
The First Howl: Trails & Nog is a winter trail event at Crevasse Moraine Trailhead in Palmer, Alaska on 01/01/2027. The event combines timed trail loops with a separate Nog Mile that pairs short runs with glasses of eggnog.
Runners have four hours to complete three separate loops on the Crevasse Moraine trail system. The loops measure 5 miles, 3 miles, and 1 mile. At bib pickup each runner spins a wheel to determine the order of their loops. At the halfway point of each loop runners must find a hidden book, tear out the page that matches their bib number, and return that page to the race director when the loop is finished. The first male and female runners to complete all three loops and turn in all three pages are the winners for the trail portion.
The Nog Mile follows the trail loops as an optional event. Participants drink eight ounce servings of eggnog at a pavilion, run a quarter mile, and return for the next serving; completing four such laps equals one mile. The fastest male and female participants to complete the four laps without vomiting are the winners for the Nog Mile. Eggnog will be provided and donations are appreciated.
Registration is available in three options: Trails and Nog, Trails only, or Nog only. Registration opens 11/06/2026 and closes 12/27/2026. Fees by entry:
- 10 Miles Trails & Nog, registration fee $60
- 9 Miles Trails only, registration fee $45
- 1 Mile Nog only, registration fee $20
Awards are given to top male and female finishers in each race. Every finisher receives a custom First Howl gift. Parking at Crevasse Moraine is limited and additional street parking is available. A 2027 MatSu Borough parking permit is required for the day and can be obtained online or at the lot kiosk. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
