The First Howl: Trails & Nog
The event at Crevasse Moraine Trailhead in Palmer, AK combines winter trail loops with a festive Nog Mile. Trail entrants complete three loops on the Crevasse Moraine trail system: a 5 mile, a 3 mile, and a 1 mile loop. Runners have four hours to finish all three loops. At bib pickup each runner spins a wheel to determine the order of their loops. At the halfway point of each loop runners must find a hidden book, remove the page that matches their bib number, and return that page to the race director when they finish that loop. The first male and female finishers to complete all three loops and turn in three pages are the winners.
Following the trail portion, participants may take part in the Nog Mile. In that event each runner drinks an 8 oz glass of eggnog at the pavilion before running a quarter mile, repeating this sequence for four laps to complete one mile. The fastest male and female runners to complete four laps without vomiting are the winners. Eggnog will be provided; additional contributions are appreciated.
There are three registration options: Trails and Nog combined, Trails only, or Nog only. Awards will be given to top male and female finishers of each race. Every finisher receives a custom First Howl gift. Parking is limited and a 2027 MatSu Borough parking permit is required. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
