The Feral Hog Mountain Run
The Feral Hog Mountain Run is a donation based trail race held in Norfork, Arkansas, organized by Syllamo Events. The course is a World Mountain Running Association recognized "Mountain Classic" style route that pairs a sustained climb with a technical descent along the Ozark Highlands Trail around Matney Knob.
The course covers approximately 7.5 miles with about 1,800 feet of elevation gain and a 4 hour time limit. Runners begin on roughly 3/4 mile of doubletrack before transitioning to singletrack on the Ozark Highlands Trail and returning to the original doubletrack. Singletrack terrain varies from smooth pine needle sections to unmaintained game trail and includes roots, rocks, and boulders. There are zero miles of pavement on the route.
Race rules require staying on the marked trail indicated with yellow flagging and using proper trail etiquette when passing; earbuds are discouraged. Alcohol is not allowed inside park boundaries and dogs are not permitted on the race course. The start and finish area is at the Misty Mornings Pavilion, which also serves as a venue for on site camping and nearby cabin or RV stays.
The event limits entries to 75 and accepts donations in the suggested amounts of $0, $25, $50, or $75. Proceeds support local trail building and maintenance projects in and around Norfork. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
