The Cake Race

The Cake Race is a BM fell race held on 2 May 2026 from Diggle Hotel in Diggle, Saddleworth (OL3 5JZ). The course is approximately 10 miles long with about 1700 ft of ascent. Entries open 16 January 2026 and close 29 April 2026; entry fees are listed as FRA member £8.00 and non member £10.00. Entries on the day may be possible subject to a 300 runner capacity and cash only payment.

The route crosses open moorland, Pennine farmland and areas of industrial heritage. Most of the course is on flagged paths, tracks and trails and includes sections named Boat Lane and stretches past Brun Cough and Wessenden Head reservoirs. Runners descend and reascend a long flight of stone steps by a dam, return to the moors and finish where cakes and tea are provided for finishers.

As a fell race it is intended for runners accustomed to trail or fell running. There is a cut-off at the downward steps beside Butterley Reservoir at Marsden; runners not past this point within 1.5 hours from the start may be asked to retire for safety. Full kit is required and will be checked; required items include waterproof top with hood and waterproof bottoms with taped seams, hat, gloves, compass, map and whistle. GPS devices are allowed.

A Cake Competition runs alongside the race. Runners may bring cakes for judging in categories such as best decorated, best tasting and best juniors cake. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
