The Barkley Fall Classic

The Barkley Fall Classic is a 50 kilometer trail race held in Frozen Head State Park, Tennessee. The course follows trails through the Brushy Mountains and includes numerous steep climbs and descents, long runnable sections, and several scenic vistas. The official course map is not revealed until the night before the race and course markings are placed only at major turns; runners must navigate remaining sections without GPS, which is prohibited.

The event enforces a set of rules intended to protect the park and ensure fair competition: no pacers or bandit runners, no trekking poles, no GU packets in original packaging, no drop bags or caching, no littering, and runners must follow the marked course. Entrants receive an additional bib to wear on their back for identification. Runners who choose to withdraw must notify race staff or park rangers and report to the finish line timing tent.

A defined decision point separates the marathon and 50K courses; reaching that point within the allotted time allows a runner to accept a marathon finish or continue toward the full 50K, but continuing eliminates eligibility for the marathon result. Those who continue past the decision point must carry a working flashlight to proceed toward the Croix de Barque option.

Race operations include packet pickup, a pre-race dinner, and local camping and lodging options. Refunds for withdrawals are handled if requested before the stated cutoff; an 80% refund is noted for timely requests. Proceeds support Morgan County organizations and Frozen Head State Park.
