The Backland
The Backland is a last man standing trail race organized by Texas Outlaw Running at Walnut Creek Resort & Marina, 1075 Walnut Creek Rd, Gordonville, TX. The course is run mostly on trail with some road sections and uses a repeating loop format.
Runners complete a single loop called a "land" that measures 4.5 miles. Competitors must complete each land within one hour to continue; failing to finish a land or quitting removes a runner from the competition and the runner rings a bell. Entry to the last man standing competition is limited to 80 participants; this limit was increased from the prior 60 runner cap. A rule effective in 2025 disallows ties. The final remaining runner is titled The Backland Champion.
Event awards include a Backland long sleeve shirt and a beer or root beer for all finishers. Runners who reach 103.5 miles (23 lands) receive a 100-mile belt buckle; those who reach 153 miles (34 lands) receive a golden 150-mile belt buckle. The last person standing receives a $1000 cash prize, a trophy, and a six-pack of beer or root beer. A trophy is also awarded for the best setup at the start/finish area.
Camping options at the event location include tent camping at the start/finish, reservable campsites, or cabins at the resort. The event motto is "Run Till You Can't." Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
