About the race
The 16 Hour Lock-In is a timed endurance event held at Carolina Beach State Park in Carolina Beach, NC, organized by Punk Rock Ultras. Participants run repeated laps of a 4.5-mile loop and may complete as many laps as they choose during the 16-hour period. The event is a no DNF format so runners of different paces share the same event and goals can range from a single lap to many laps.
The course is on groomed, wide, relatively flat trails in a coastal maritime forest. Each loop includes two hills with about 100 feet of climb, and surfaces of dirt, sand, pine straw, roots and a short section of road. The Start/Finish area provides a sheltered drop bag area, access to bathrooms, and a staffed aid station.
The aid station supplies water, Tailwind, and a variety of salty, sweet and savory snacks, plus two hot meals served at lunch and dinner with vegan and gluten free options when requested. The race is cup free so participants must bring a refillable hydration vessel. A headlamp or similar light is required for runners on the course after the evening cutoff.
Overnight access inside the park requires a registered camping spot. The event offers a limited number of group campsite spots adjacent to the course with a reserved 10x10 area and primitive facilities; alternative reservations can be made at the park family campground a short walk or drive away. The race may sell out; a waitlist and a partial refund policy are described. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
