Swammie Shuffle 200
The Swammie Shuffle 200 is a long distance running event in Virginia Beach, VA that supports veteran suicide prevention. The event features a 200 Miler course that begins at Sandbridge Beach, runs more than 100 miles south through the Outer Banks of North Carolina to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, and returns to the start. The route passes three lighthouses: Corolla, Bodie Island, and Cape Hatteras. The first and last roughly 20 miles follow beach terrain between Sandbridge and Corolla, while the middle sections use sidewalks and road shoulders. The last miles before the finish run through a back bay refuge; entrants are not allowed in the refuge from 30 minutes after sunset until 30 minutes before sunrise.
Support, aid, and logistics are limited. The race does not provide aid stations, and organizers allow outside support but restrict riding in a moving vehicle and marking the course. Volunteers are available to pick up participants who cannot continue. There are stretches of about 20 miles without stores, and participants arrange their own rest and sleep within the event time limit of five and a half days. Entry is limited to 30 in person participants. Proceeds are divided between Awareness N Action and Mission22, two charities focused on veteran issues. The event offers some participant swag.
