Event Overview
The Swammie Shuffle 200 is an ultra-endurance event held in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Participants cover a distance of more than 200 miles on a course that travels from Sandbridge Beach south through the Outer Banks of North Carolina to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, which serves as the turnaround point. The event is a fundraiser dedicated to raising awareness and funds for veteran suicide prevention, with proceeds benefiting the Awareness N Action and Mission 22 charities.
The course features various terrain and landmarks:
- The first and last segments of approximately 20 miles take place along the beach between Sandbridge Beach and Corolla.
- The middle sections utilize sidewalks and shoulders through the coastal towns of the Outer Banks.
- The route passes three distinct lighthouses: Corolla, Bodie Island, and Cape Hatteras.
- The final miles leading to the finish line traverse the beach within the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge.
Participation and Support
Registration for the in-person event is limited to 30 participants. Runners have a total of five and a half days to complete the course. Regulations state that participants cannot be on the refuge beach from 30 minutes after sunset until 30 minutes before sunrise.
This is a self-supported style event. The organizers do not provide aid stations along the route, and runners are responsible for their own navigation, as the course is not marked. Participants may have a personal support crew and are permitted to rest in stationary vehicles, but riding in a moving vehicle results in disqualification.
