Nelson's Summit 50/50
Nelson's Summit 50/50 is an annual trail running event held in the Red House Area of Allegany State Park in Salamanca, New York. Organized by Salt City Trail Racing, the event takes place within the largest state park in New York, which covers nearly 65,000 acres on the Northern Appalachian Plateau. The race is USATF sanctioned, Trail Sisters approved, and serves as a UTMB Index race.
Participants can choose from three distinct distances:
- 50 Miler: Approximately 50.2 miles with 6,873 feet of elevation change and a 14-hour cutoff.
- 50 km: Approximately 32.2 miles with 4,537 feet of elevation change and a 9-hour cutoff.
- 25 km: Approximately 16.1 miles with 2,244 feet of elevation change and a 6-hour cutoff.
The course follows a looped system starting and ending at the Art Roscoe warming hut. The terrain consists of a mix of groomed trails, single track, and rolling hills. Runners navigate the woods using a course marked with flags and signs. Two well-stocked aid stations provide water, hydration drinks, fruit, and snacks such as pickles, PB&Js, and pretzels. Participants in the 50 Miler have access to additional hot food options after the 34-mile mark.
All registrants receive a pair of socks, and prizes are awarded to top finishers in each gender division for every distance. Registration is open until late October, though price increases occur throughout the year. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
