Strandloper Trail Run
A linear coastal trail run between De Hoek, Noordhoek Beach and the Camel Rock Restaurant in Scarborough, covering a distance of 16 km. Because the course is point to point, runners must arrange return transport from the finish.
The event is open to male and female competitors in the following age categories: MASTERS (50 years plus), VET (40 to 49 years) and SENIOR (16 to 39 years). Entry is R490 ZAR per person and there are 200 pre entries available. Entries are confirmed once proof of payment is received; refunds are restricted and an administration fee of R150 applies in refund cases. No substitutions are allowed after four days before the run.
Entrants receive a GPX route file, race number and a run briefing by email prior to the event. There are no water tables on route so runners must be self sufficient for hydration. Portable toilets are provided at the Noordhoek beach car park (off Longbeach), Kommetjie and at the finish. At the finish participants can exchange an arm tag for a breakfast roll and their race number for a cup of filter coffee; a branded run cap or peak or visor is handed out at the finish.
The route passes the Kakapo wreck, Kommetjie Beach, a boardwalk below the lighthouse, the Soetwater coastal route, Witsand beach, the grassy and rocky Strandloper trail and Misty Cliffs, then up timber steps onto a wide gravel verge toward Scarborough. Runners must stay on existing trails, keep to the right on the gravel section, avoid running on the tar road and be mindful of traffic and other users.
Mandatory kit includes a waterproof rain jacket with hood and long sleeves, a cellular phone, sufficient hydration, a mini first aid kit (stretch bandage, wound dressing, antiseptic cream, anti histamine and anti inflammatory tablets, triangular bandage), a whistle and a space blanket. Earphones and personal music are prohibited for safety. Emergency contact and medical details must be carried on route. Participants are expected to assist others in need and to collect any litter encountered; the organiser also conducts coastal litter collection before the event. The organisers state that participation is at the entrant's own risk and outline procedures for medical evacuation where required. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
