Steel City Human vs Horse
The Steel City Human vs Horse is a multi-discipline event held in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania. Modeled after established race formats in the United Kingdom and Arizona, this event features a simultaneous trail running race and a horseback endurance race. Both runners and riders share the course to determine which is faster over long distances. The trails consist of a varied landscape including single track sections, gravel roads, and grassy meadows.
Participants can choose from several distance options:
- 50 Miles (available as an individual run or a relay for runners)
- 50 km
- Half Marathon
The event is open to both runners and hikers for the Half Marathon and 50 km distances. All participants, including those with no prior experience with horses, must attend a pre-race safety meeting to review trail etiquette. The equestrian portion of the event is sanctioned by the American Endurance Ride Conference (AERC).
Specific time limits are in place for all distances. Runners have 14 hours for the 50 mile course, 13 hours for the 50 km, and 8 hours for the Half Marathon. All participants are required to be off the course by 8:30 pm. Free primitive camping is available on-site for both human and equine participants. In the event of poor weather or dangerous trail conditions, the course may be rerouted to gravel roads. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
