South Island Ultra Marathon

The South Island Ultra Marathon takes place on the West Coast Wilderness Trail on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island and finishes on the beachfront at Hokitika. The event comprises four races over trail terrain that includes lakes, reservoirs, rivers, streams, water races, swing bridges, bridges from historic tram lines, a western town, forestry, wetlands, boardwalks, mountains and the sea. The trail is a Grade 2 mountain bike ride and includes uphill sections and a downhill finish to the seafront. Entry is limited to 400 participants.

Race options:

  • 100 km Greymouth to Hokitika, solo or team of 2
  • 54 km Old Christchurch Road to Hokitika, solo or team of 2
  • 24 km Lake Kaniere to Hokitika, solo
  • 6 km Kaniere Township run/walk, solo

The 100 km route has about 720 m of total elevation and the 54 km about 500 m, figures based on competitor records of 2021. Teams for the 100 km and 54 km events may change at designated points along the course. The event lists fundraising organizations, including West Coast Wilderness Trail, Ronald McDonald House Charities New Zealand Trust and Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust.
